2025 Results Are In: Spain Won Big at NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition

Spanish olive farmers and producers celebrated a successful 2024/25 harvest by winning 93 awards at the 2025 New York International World Olive Oil Competition. Seventy-seven Gold and sixteen Silver medals were awarded to Spanish brands out of total 127 entries from the country, a success rate of 73%. Overall, 742 oils from 28 countries were awarded this year, including 517 Gold and 225 Silver awards. The World Olive Oil Competition compiles data on over 10,000 extra virgin olive oil brands across 38 total countries since 2013.

Spain is the largest olive oil producing country in the world, contributing around half of the global supply. After two years of high spring temperatures and drought resulting in historically poor harvests, 2024 brought a wet and mild winter and spring that resulted in abundant olive crop yields of magnificent quality.

Spain produced 1.41 million metric tons of olive oil in the most recent 2024/25 crop year, up significantly from 852,600 tons in 2023/24 and 665,800 tons in 2022/23. Spanish farmers, millers, bottlers, and distributors were relieved to recover both production and quality and win back extra virgin olive oil consumers after two years of higher costs.

This year, extra virgin olive oil producers from Andalucía in Southern Spain, the world's largest olive oil producing region, won a combined 60 awards at the World Olive Oil Competition.

Winning an award at NYIOOC is important for producers who want to enter into the United States extra virgin olive oil market, which is the largest importer of olive oil in the world. "These awards act as an indisputable seal of quality and attract the attention of consumers and distributors; it can also justify a higher price for the product, recognizing the excellence and effort behind it," export manager Luís Rubio told Olive Oil Times.
